Conception is the moment when the sperm and egg meet to form a fertilized egg, also known as a zygote. This occurs in the fallopian tubes, usually within 24 hours after ovulation. From this point onwards, the zygote begins its journey towards the uterus, where it will implant and develop.
When Does Pregnancy Commence?
Pregnancy officially commences when the fertilized egg implants itself into the uterine lining. This process, known as implantation, typically occurs about 6 to 12 days after conception. Once implantation takes place, the body starts producing the pregnancy hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
However, it is important to note that the moment of delivery is not considered the start of pregnancy. Pregnancy starts with conception and continues through the different stages of gestation until the moment of delivery. The journey from conception to delivery takes approximately 40 weeks.
So, while the moment of delivery is undoubtedly the culmination of the entire pregnancy journey, it is not the starting point. Each step along the way, from conception to delivery, is a significant part of the incredible process of pregnancy.
